Google publicized its new Meta keywords tag back in 2012 precisely for news publishers and it appears to have soundlessly worked its way through to dropping its support months ago.
The recent news had been brought up to the public through an official word by Google’s John Mueller, the spark of the conversation which was set off by Joost de Valk – the founder of Yoast.
taking into consideration that the tag had been dropped months before the official word had recently been brought up, should suit as an indication of how many site owners used the tag in their news articles.
A lower than average adoption rate may be the first thing to come in mind as to why Google may have dropped its support, however, Google hasn’t released any specific reason as to what exactly led them to drop its support.
So take a deep breath, and don’t worry about the tags that you already have in place, just let this be a reminder to not pull that extra effort to add the tags in your future news related articles.
